Position Overview 
The Director, ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) will lead the company’s efforts in integrating sustainable practices and industrial development strategies. This role is pivotal in driving the company’s ESG initiatives, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, and fostering sustainable growth. The Director will work closely with senior leadership to align ESG goals with business objectives and enhance the company’s reputation as a leader in sustainability.


Responsibilities 
Strategic Leadership:

  • Develop and implement the company’s ESG strategy in alignment with corporate goals and strategic growth plans.
  • Lead the industrial development initiatives to support sustainable growth and innovation.
  • Collaborate with executive leadership to integrate ESG considerations into business planning and decision-making processes.

 

ESG Program Management:

  • Oversee the development and execution of ESG programs and initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant environmental, social, and governance regulations and standards.
  • Monitor and report on ESG performance metrics and progress towards goals.
  • Deliver annual ESG report, TCFD report and support input to Annual report.
  • Support M&A office related to ESG due diligence and integration.  

 

Sustainability Strategy

  • Develop sustainability strategies and strategic objectives 
  • Develop and implement the company’s Net Zero Challenge roadmap
  • Interface with Finance team on collection and quality control of quantitative and qualitative sustainability and climate-related data for Calian’s sustainability reporting.
  • Lead planning and coordination of stakeholder engagement to develop responses to sustainability surveys from raters/rankings (e.g. S&P Corporate Sustainability Assessment, CDP, Sustainalytics, Ecovadis and others), RFPs and other ad-hoc requests.
  • Monitor sustainability and climate trends, reporting frameworks and standards (e.g. Global Reporting Initiative, SASB, TCFD, OSFI, ISSB/CSSB, CSRD and related regulatory disclosure requirements), evaluate changes/impacts.

 

Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Engage with internal and external stakeholders, including investors, regulators, and community groups, to communicate the company’s ESG commitments and performance.
  • Foster partnerships with industry organizations, universities, NGOs, and other entities to advance ESG objectives and strategy.

 

Industrial Development:

  • Identify and pursue opportunities for industrial development that align with ESG principles and client requirements.
  • Lead projects aimed at improving operational efficiency, reducing environmental impact, and promoting sustainable practices.
  • Support collaboration with industry partners and universities that drives innovation, strategic business unit community investment priorities 

 

Team Leadership:

  • Build and lead a high-performing team of ESG and industrial development professionals.
  • Provide mentorship and development opportunities to team members.
  • Foster a culture of sustainability and continuous improvement within the organization.


Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in ESG, sustainability, and/or industrial development roles. 
  • Minimum of at least 5 years in a leadership position.
  • Strong knowledge of ESG frameworks, standards, and regulations.
  • Strong knowledge of government economic development programs (i.e. offsets (Canadian Industrial and Technological Benefits policy) and Indigenous Participation Policy)
  • Proven track record of developing and implementing successful ESG and industrial development strategies.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Ability to think strategically and drive innovative solutions.
