Position Overview

For more than 30 years Calian Learning has helped dozens of organizations, military clients and government departments bring their training and learning programs to the next level. From onboarding to upskilling—using in-person, blended and technology-enabled learning solutions 

We are looking for a highly qualified Managing Director to oversee the strategic direction and fiscal management of Calian UK. In this pivotal role, you will drive growth, shape strategy, and ensure operational excellence. You will be responsible aligning growth with strategic objectives, engaging with customers, overseeing strategic contracts, and actively participating in critical decision-making processes. As the ideal candidate you have demonstrated outstanding leadership, strong organizational capabilities, financial expertise, and a comprehensive understanding of military operations, training protocols, and the Defence sector. Responsibilities

  • Serve as a business leader, setting the culture and values to ensure that all employees are engaged and motivated. 
  • Set the strategic direction for Calian UK by developing and implementing policies consistent with the strategic goals of Calian Ltd. 
  • Identify growth opportunities, develop strategic initiatives, and establish partnerships that accelerate revenue growth and market expansion. 
  • Leverage a deep understanding of the MOD UK contracting processes to proactively engage senior decision-makers. 
  • Work with the Learning VP Sales to lead opportunity capture and ensure closing efforts align with Calian sales practices. 
  • Efficiently and effectively manage all resources and employees of Calian UK to ensure optimal performance and productivity. 
  • Make strategic decisions that align with the company’s goals and drive operational excellence. 
  • Ensure that Calian UK abides by all relevant laws and rules. 
  • Facilitate effective interactions between the company and its stakeholders, ensuring that all relevant parties are informed and involved. 
  • Ensure timely and accurate reporting on business operations, financial results, and other key performance indicators. 
  • Report to Calian Learning leadership, attend meetings, and provide input as required. 
  • Provide strategic oversight and direction to ensure and facilitate the seamless integration of capabilities and technologies. 

 

Qualifications

  • An undergraduate degree in Business Administration, Finance, Engineering, or a related field is required, with a graduate degree preferred. 
  • Over 10 years of progressively responsible experience in senior management and leadership roles, with a proven track record of success. 
  • Strong skills in budgeting, financial analysis, and strategic financial planning. 
  • Extensive experience in management and performance optimization. 
  • Extensive experience in military operations and training at the operational level (corps or equivalent) and a deep understanding of UK military training and training technology. NATO command and staff experience is preferred. 
  • Proven experience in driving and winning new business opportunities. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools. 
  • Excellent communication, analytical, and process management skills. 
  • The ability to see the big picture, make connections, and anticipate the consequences and outcomes of actions and decisions. 
  • Strong leadership skills, including the ability to get things done through others and develop people. 
  • Strong employee relations skills with the ability to relate well with internal and external clients. 
  • Self-motivation and the ability to make effective decisions. 
  • Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to employ a systematic approach for identifying and tracking dependencies, ensuring proper resolution of outstanding items, and structuring meetings/discussions. 
  • The ability to identify potential obstacles and formulate proactive solutions (problem-solver).
