Position Overview

As a member of the Calian Composites engineering Mechanical Technologists play a key role in supporting manufacturing operations by bridging the gap between engineering design and practical implementation on the shop floor. Their work focuses on optimizing and maintaining production processes, developing and updating manufacturing documentation, and supporting prototype builds and tooling development.

These individuals apply technical expertise to refine existing processes, design jigs and fixtures, and adapt manufacturing methods to suit specific product or project needs. While their work is grounded in established engineering principles, their day-to-day responsibilities are oriented toward practical, hands-on problem solving and continuous improvement within the production environment.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, maintain, and improve manufacturing process documentation (e.g., work instructions, process flow diagrams, routings).
  • Support process design and optimization for existing operations, including layout planning, equipment selection, and material handling
  • Design, test, and implement tooling, fixtures, and jigs to improve quality, repeatability, and ease of production.
  • Collaborate with engineers, production staff, and technicians to troubleshoot issues and ensure smooth production transitions.
  • Contribute to prototype fabrication and pre-production builds, including hands-on support and feedback for manufacturability.
  • Participate in continuous improvement efforts, drawing from both technical knowledge and shop-floor insights.

Mechanical Technologists are valued for their ability to translate engineering intent into robust, practical solutions that enhance manufacturing efficiency, consistency, and safety.

Qualifications

Education

  • Technologist Diploma (such as Mechanical Technology or Design and Manufacturing Technology), degree or equivalent of education and experience

Experience

  • 3-7 years of relevant experience in a mechanical design or manufacturing environment for Intermediate level.
    We’re also open to Junior candidates and graduates for this role.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Inventor, AutoCAD).
  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems, manufacturing processes, and materials.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and specifications.
  • Good problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot and support technical challenges.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.

Familiarity with industry standards (ASME, ISO, etc.) is an asset
